Meghalaya- An Unforgettable Experience

Meghalaya is one of the seven North-eastern states of India famous for its high rainfall, subtropical forests and biodiversity. True to its name, it is a land of clouds. I went there four years ago and was in awe with the place. I hoped we never had left. The nature welcomes you with the song of the birds and cool breeze. High mountains and cotton candy clouds play hide and seek with the Sun⛅. Life in the valleys filled with lush green and smiling trees seemed to be simple yet peaceful. I had never thought that nature can be so magnificent😍. All you could see was white, fluffy clouds coming in your way. It looked like there were no roads the car was flying in the clouds. I used to take my hand out of the car window and wow! the feel of the clouds on it was something inexpressible. It was cold and moist and .... as I said, inexpressible.😌

Mawlynnong Village

There, we visited Shillong, Cherrapunjee and Mawlynnong village- the cleanest village in Asia. In Shillong, one can visit Elephant Falls. The cool crystal-clear water falling off the rocks and forming a magnificent rainbow🌈 was something very soothing to the eyes.

Cherrapunjee is one of the places which receive the heaviest rainfall. I remember visiting seven sister falls there. They were seven different waterfalls falling down near to each other from a mountain. It was a very unique site in itself!

Now coming to my most favorite place - Mawlynnong village. To some the word ‘clean’ may sound odd with respect to a village but believe me its true! The natives of this village are themselves very committed to keep their surroundings clean. Moreover, you will find a bamboo dustbin every few meters. Above all, every person of this village is educated. I was really surprised to see village people conversing in English with the tourists. Unlike other tourist places, they sell fruits as snacks which they grow in their gardens instead of Maggie and cold drinks. I still miss that mouth watering fresh and juicy pineapple which I enjoyed a lot!🍍

Elephant Falls

The main communities of this state are the Garos, the Khasis and the Jaintias. One can see a number of churches as well as temples, mosques, gurudwaras and monasteries in Meghalaya.

The state of Meghalaya is predominantly an agricultural state and the level of industrialisation is low. It has not witnessed the desired level of investment and industrial growth because of lack of basic infrastructure. If the correct policies are pursued the region will be able to improve its economy. Under a new economic strategy private investment should be encouraged. Sustainable tourism plan for Meghalaya has been prepared to strengthen primary sector (agriculture and allied activities) and secondary sector (manufacturing and mining) for rapid inputs and raw materials in order to improve overall productivity of the economy.
